Author Chimananda Ngozi Adichie has just made a statement that I want to applaud. She’s a voice speaking out with the fiery tone that James Baldwin used to have when he called out the mob mentality among all shades and skin colours. He said – and it is still true – that hate leaves the hater like a burnt out shell inside. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement as the sloganeering has gone off the rails. It is profane and an insult to anyone’s intelligence, especially those who have travelled a lot and lived and breathed different cultures all over the world. She’s a Virgo sun with Mercury in Virgo – always a great ally for writers of any persuasion. But this Mercury is supported by sextiles to both Jupiter and Uranus. She has that punk generation stamp too with Uranus in Scorpio – 1977- shining a sudden bright light in dark territory. That was also a time when the ugly truths about society irrupted like a boil to be lanced and the media demonised working class youth as demons. She may be eviscerating the pus with this statement.
“There are many social-media-savvy people who are choking on sanctimony and lacking in compassion, who can fluidly pontificate on Twitter about kindness but are unable to actually show kindness. People whose social media lives are case studies in emotional aridity. People for whom friendship, and its expectations of loyalty and compassion and support, no longer matter. People who claim to love literature – the messy stories of our humanity – but are also monomaniacally obsessed with whatever is the prevailing ideological orthodoxy. People who demand that you denounce your friends for flimsy reasons in order to remain a member of the chosen puritan class. People who ask you to ‘educate’ yourself while not having actually read any books themselves, while not being able to intelligently defend their own ideological positions, because by ‘educate’, they actually mean ‘parrot what I say, flatten all nuance, wish away complexity’…. The assumption of good faith is dead. What matters is not goodness but the appearance of goodness. We are no longer human beings. We are now angels jostling to out-angel one another. God help us. It is obscene.”
Her Venus Saturn conjunction in Leo is the powerful if somewhat stern teller of stories that still have charm in the delivery and the fact that her Sun in Virgo is conjunct asteroid Vesta adds that devotional energy that stands her ground ground, holding the flame of sacred intention against the odds – Vesta works well in Virgo- they are so attuned to each other. Her Moon is transiting her Mercury and she is getting attention; it has gone across Mercury at 7 ̊ and the Sun at 22 ̊ literally as we speak. Her natal moon is conjunct her north node in Libra so the need for authentic justice is there in her moral compass, not to mention that asteroid Pallas Athene- wisdom and justice- is conjunct Pluto there too.
I love to locate the muse asteroids in writers’ charts and Calliope – the epic muse- is right there with the Sun and Venus lending gravitas to her inspired words. She already called out Beyonce for misappropriating her words, she is a different type of feminist to Bey- another Virgo. She also made a dire warning about the ‘Danger of the Single Story’ in her Ted Talk. The monomania of the singe narrative is never the complete picture. We need to complete the picture to have empathy and understanding. So this is her moment. She rightly points out that people who do not read novels are exactly the ones that should, as novels are designed to extend your range of sympathy to characters outside your own world. That increases tolerance not intolerance and subservience to the ‘prevailing orthodoxy’. It is one of the reasons I emphasise literature so much on this site as it offers another lens upon astrology. A diet of social media alone is not nutritious. Education is not the same as ‘parroting’ echoed phrases and flattening all nuance, and many would agree with this as also she has put it so eloquently. This trend towards condemning others is out of balance with humane approaches and I’m glad she is brave enough to make this statement.
The fact that we have to say ‘brave’ just for saying what she thinks should be warning enough that we are in perilous times where dissenting voices are silenced for arbitrary reasons based on ad hominem attacks: falsehood flies and the truth comes limping after it as Jonathan Swift , a Sagittarian known for Gulliver’s Travels , said. Stories break or make people, but it is their power to heal and empower that matters.
