1: The Rollout of Major Conjunctions

When two mighty planets conjoin, it is more than just significant, it can be the major event exerting a  pervasive influence for the whole year. In 2024 we have such a signature aspect- the conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus exact on April 20th/21st.

Squares bring a lot of tension to move things forward but conjunctions are a double dose of intensity of all the qualities of each planet even if these pull in different directions. They can be like eclipses and major ingresses, difficult to ignore. And seen in hindsight having a wider range of meanings that we’ve been obliged to process and readjust our mental furniture.

Conjunctions

Just as we had the monumental Saturn conjunct Pluto in Capricorn in early January 2020 that presaged a year of top-down style oppression and restrictions, there was the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction at 0° Aquarius on the winter solstice in December 2020, which heralded the dawn of a shift from Earth signs to Air signs. It was known as a ‘great’ conjunction. Added to that we then had the Jupiter and Neptune merging together between April 9th-12th April of 2022 and that brought in a swathe of mystical viewpoints – a kind of psychic flood in which some sank and others learned to swim.

These mega-conjunctions are pivot points where we feel the impact happen as they combine the visible (planets up to Saturn) with the invisible (planets from Saturn and beyond) and therefore affect us both at the personal and collective-unconscious level. They are cultural shifts and hold the flavour of fusion of opposites as C.G. Jung advocated as each archetype is clearly defined against the other. As markers of extraordinary change they are powerful since they denote longer less obvious synodic cycles. Each one invites growth as when two different archetypes get together, polarised viewpoints can clash. But the conjunction also allows a marriage of uneasy bedfellows. Each planet can somehow be seen through the same lens and that shakes our viewpoint to its foundations but also pushes, prods and broadens our outlook one way or the other.  These are conjunctions that stand out as peaks in the celestial mechanics which rolls on regardless.

Conjunctions are not rare and maybe for you this one is less important that some of the others like Mars conjunct Pluto on February 14th  2024, or Mars Square Uranus on March 9th or the Solar Eclipse in Aries on April 8th. From now until August 2024 for example there are 15 or so conjunctions of various planets, and on the personal level it’s business as usual for the universe, but the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction happens to be the standout one for 2024 so it’s worth wondering what it means. The way to do this is to check where Taurus is in your chart and in which house it falls.

Jupiter Uranus

By May 25th  2024 Jupiter will have moved on into Gemini when the energy shifts into an explosion of communications, business deals, contracts, the need to learn new information and that brings a Jupiter return for those with Jupiter in Gemini. Uranus takes longer and does not leave Taurus to enter Gemini until July 7th 2025, but then it goes back into Taurus Nov 7th 2025 to April 25th of 2026 before staying in Gemini.

And don’t forget that Pluto enters Aquarius once again on January 21st 2024 and that will bring more of what we have had through 2023. It enters Aquarius alongside the Sun conjunct Pluto too so it has added turbo power.  Similarly, there is huge volatility even before the  the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction as it follows a mighty Solar eclipse across the USA. That links back to the Solar eclipse of 2017 which also cut across the United Sates. The cross point is in Texas as if an X is marked there specifically, which suggests a kind of splitting up of individual states in the United States.

2: Jupiter the Guru merged with Uranus the Rebel
Jupiter Abilgaard
Jupiter weighing the Fate of Man (1793) Nicolai Abildgaard

In the Jupiter archetype he is the grandiose lover of life, giver of advice, of expanded religious or spiritual viewsknown as ‘Optimus Maximus’ in Rome, where he was the ‘overseer of agreements’, of enlarged horizons, self development, progress, opportunity, gambling, philandering, exaggeration, being inclusive of foreigners. He is multi-faceted, irascible, cheerful, making laws and establishing belief systems but also quite lucky in that he lands on his feet more often than not. We’ll get a welcome dose of Jupiter when the Sun moves into Sagittarius on November 23rd.

In the Uranus archetype he is the sky god Ouranus, the bringer of fire and of inspiration/intuition, aka Prometheus, the rule breaker. He presides over sudden and unexpected change, breakups, breakdowns, nervous attacks, out of the box thinking, innovations, transpersonal change that happens at lightning speed. He is also the humanitarian and revolutionary who can bring utopian/dystopian societal crises. He’s the sceptic and exposer of frauds and one thing he detests is hypocrisy and broken ideologies.

What these archetypes two have in common is their love of freedom and honesty. They are about ideas and inspirations, deeper meanings, broad understanding and of acting sometimes without caution. Yet they were one  time mortal enemies, so when they get together they represent waking up to a vastly expanded world of new horizons, or where we might experience some ‘aha’ moments, some tension, which offers fresh insight. It can give us the eagle’s view, a feeling a breakthrough into some new ideal. It may encourage us to be much more free-spirited, benevolent, adventurous, and far seeking than before, and could even be visionary and prophetic, so gear up for the influx of new inspiration next April.

In Taurus this intensification through this conjunction is also a return to the simple life by economy of means, by removing layers of complexity from life, you are able to enjoy it in a more straightforward manner without the usual paraphernalia and remove a lot of the toxic detritus in your life.

The problem might be that Taurus is a fixed earth sign so it like to stay put in the mud right where it is and not budge. But it is ruled by Venus so there is a graciousness, harmony and love of social life that rescues it from this tendency towards inflexibility. Jupiter can expand the existing habits which may or may not be useful, and make them even more ingrained,  but Uranus comes along with a flashlight and says it is time for a change, so the old habits can shift on a dime, and new behaviours can take root and become new fixed habits- a reprogramming is possible.

So while it points to keeping your feet on the ground, the energy can be jostled by the flood of high-minded ideas bestowed by Uranus and Jupiter, rebel and guru together. The challenge is to bring Heaven to Earth as in the Chi Gong practice which might be good to do during this time to maximise the benefits and restore balance. It involves running both hands from the head down the body tracing the main energy meridians. Another version of this is the more gentle ‘Drawing down the Heavens. and this just calms down the nervous system helping you to sleep and Uranus rules the nervous system and our magnetic bio-field that extends beyond the physical body.

This conjunction is ruled by Venus and with Jupiter in the house, this combination blends and well together being both traditionally labelled as ‘benefics’ even though all planets have both good and bad threads within their narrative so labelling planets is not helpful. But with Venus and Uranus there’s less friendliness,  It’s associated with love at first sight, on-off relationships, but it could also involve possessions, money investments, especially around crypto-currency or sudden changes in the banking system causing a reevaluation of costs.

The whole period of the conjunction runs from April 18th to April 26th . This is when news about any new money system is likely to counter the sorry state that the economy has been brought to at the edge of the abyss. This could be about the roll out of Universal Basic income which is money that can be turned on and off by the government depending on your behaviour. The massive promotion of CBDCs, or any form of central bank controlled money, involves digital IDs which vacuum up personal data. So, it is controversial and some might say unethical too. However, if these new money-control systems are promoted and pushed too suddenly, it’s liable to be rejected as happened in Nigeria.

It could be problematic as both Uranus and Jupiter stand for freedom and liberty, but they can both be a tad dogmatic too. They do not want to sign up to more excessive regulation or restriction. They don’t like to be confined in any Saturnian way. In Taurus it could point also to the driving ahead of the financialisation of nature. So there could be a mixed bag of events causing abreactions. Yet, digital money may be pushed ahead in diverse ways, even in a decentralised manner contrary to what governments are itching for, allowing people to be less surveilled. It can also bring a breadth of fresh ideas or for travel and expansion so align your intentions with that and be carried along by the surge of electricity.

Jupiter and Uranus conjoined last time in Pisces in December 2010, January 2011 and that was the time I first went off to an ashram in India to spend time- in spiritual seclusion.  Check back in your diary what you were doing and see if it matches up. The time before that Jupiter and Uranus got together in Aquarius in February of 1997. So consider what you were doing at these times to get a flavour of what’s to come.

But the previous time that Jupiter was conjunct Uranus actually in the sign of Taurus was between 1940-1941. This was during the time that women went to work in the factories and earned the money that the men would earn had they not been fighting the war. That in itself was revolutionary highlighting the themes of women and money and a readjustment of stereotypical roles.

Check the degree as 21° of Taurus may be conjunct one of your natal planets, or opposing it in Scorpio, or squaring this point in Aquarius or Leo.  Or you may already have an aspect between Jupiter and Uranus in your chart, in which case, it will highlight this axis. Planets in Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, and planets in Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, may also get a booster from this energy.

This is the same degree that there was a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in 2000 at the time of the dot com boom, so this point with Uranus there it may expose just how wide and deep the banking fraud really is. Taureans may be acting more out of character, making sudden changes to their routine with Uranus there. You may benefit somehow by some kind of blessing, with Jupiter there triggering the Uranus, but there may be a twist to the plot, so keep an eye out for challenges popping up too.

Also, check the house this conjunction resides to learn which area in life it will manifest most for you.  If you have for example Venus, Jupiter or Pluto on this degree, and especially if it is in the Second House, you may come into a windfall of money, but then possibly proceed to lose it almost immediately, repeating the relentless cycle of income versus outgoings. But money itself may mean something completely new to us, and what we once valued we no longer value or invest time and energy in.

The Sabian symbol for this degree 21-22° of Taurus is a very hopeful image that perhaps it will bring a much-needed domain of calm while the chaos still rages on below. It isA White Dove over Troubled Waters.”  The meanings of these symbols are often elusive and odd, but they have a resonance that is intuitive, and could resonate differently for different people. Somehow, it feels appropriate exactly because the world has turned ugly, people consolidate and affirm their higher ideals to counter that same ugliness, starving it of breath.

3: Aspects to the Jupiter-Uranus Conjunction

It is telling that Pluto will have reached 2° of Aquarius by the time of the conjunction so we may see many of the innovations that is set to bring and an emphasis on how technological change such as AI impacts us on a deep level.

This puts Jupiter/Uranus sextile to Mars at 22° of Pisces so it could be giving force to some deeper intuition, from a water sign to an earth sign. Sextiles are supportive so Mars may trawl information from dreams. Mars is not far from Saturn however which is at 15° of Pisces reaching the mid-point of its journey in that Neptune ruled sign. Saturn in Pisces is either melting boundaries further and causing confusion, or it forces you to create sturdier boundaries while you are still in touch with other worlds, or knowing what your soul wants to do.

This is a great signature for Yoga as Mars is the Physical, Saturn brings the discipline and Pisces brings the elevation towards spirituality. But it could also be that you overdo these disciplines getting lost in the mix. Life still needs to have some relaxation and humour. I hope that at its highest and best it means a breakthrough with spiritual practices, as it is quite finely balanced all the planets that relate to the practice of yoga: Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus conjunct sextile Mars (action) and Saturn (discipline)  in Pisces emphasises the physical (mind-body-spirit) nature of those practices- the asanas.

Mercury at 16° is retrograde on this day and conjunct the North Node at 14° of Aries. That’s a review of how we become pioneers and self starters and to learn how to stand in our sovereign being, not to be led along by those who supress individuality and wish to subsume us into herdthink.  Whatever sudden opportunities land on your plate served up by the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction, Mercury here is a go-for-it kind of message on the North Node however challenging that may appear.

At the very least it is a chance to review the multiple options, before we make any bold decisions once Mercury goes forward again on April 25th.  This is especially true to take care with decisions as Mercury stationed on April 1st associated with the Fool in the Tarot. This card depicts a man about to step off a cliff, so bear in mind the dangers of moving blithely ahead regardless. Take heed of what is beneath your feet too.

4: The Asteroid Outlook

When it comes to asteroids, it is always good to look at what is also on that degree for any other layer to the overall picture. They may not be the major players but if their stories strike a chord with you they can be significant often pinpointing exactly some minor detail.

The Jupiter/Uranus squares asteroid Chariklo who was the nymph married to Chiron in the myth and only rarely depicted as a centaur.  This could produce a feeling that support is there somewhere in the invisible realm, but is not as forthcoming as you would like. Chariklo is the ‘abide with me’ archetype, of the ‘clear light’ and ‘holding infinite space’ so that energy may be blocked, or be there, but need to be worked hard to obtain, and support for your projects dries up from those who promised to be there for you.

It is also conjunct asteroid Pandora at 20° Taurus. The past few years has been a kind of unleashing of rampant evil spirits and the danger of where curiosity can lead down different rabbit holes. But to give it a positive slant, remember that last evil creature to escape from Pandora’s box was the spirit of Hope so that aligns nicely with the Sabian symbol.

The conjunction is also trine to asteroid Ceres – the very first one to be discovered in the 19th century. This means she also trines Mars. Ceres from the myth is about love and grief and loss, but also relates to the agricultural theme where it is either a feast or a famine, or rotation of crops. So food issues may come up where agricultural innovations become a possibility because of shortages. Interesting too that the conjunction is directly opposite asteroid Kaali 21° Scorpio. Kaali in the Hindu myth emerged out of goddess Parvati, is Shiva’s consort and is associated with time, change, destruction, creation and death. But she kills in order to defend the innocent. She has not been heavily researched in any charts, so there is little to go on as to the effect this asteroid might have- most probably like a female version of Pluto. This might only be significant if you have a planet on this point in Scorpio. For those interested in the love angle, Eros and Psyche are trine from Aquarius to Gemini so in Air signs the least we can expect is that this is the unhindered flow of love talk via texting and on the internet.

5: Natives born with Jupiter-Uranus conjunction

Whoever was or is born with this conjunction would express this largesse, originality, and maybe a few internally warring contradictions of personality. With Jupiter-Uranus in your natal chart it might suggest someone supremely skilled in their field, the best of the best of their profession. To examine that people do with conjunction is useful to highlight a few of the themes it is likely to bring in 2024.

Alec Guinness
Alec Guinness as Mr. Dorrit (1987) dir. Christine Edzard

British Actor Alec Guinness, born 2/4/1914, had this conjunction but it was in Aquarius. One of his best film roles was as the gracious, charming, but ineffectual Mr. Dorrit who pronounced ‘obliged’ as ‘obleeeged’. This was in the 1987 adaptation of ‘Little Dorrit’ by Charles Dickens. Mr Dorrit was consigned to the Marshalsea Debtors’ prison for most of his life but he was a feckless, self-important figure, acting like royalty with imaginary prestige, taking money from anyone who offered and ignoring the toils of all those who supported him like little Amy Dorrit, his daughter. He loses a fortune, then gains it back, then loses it again.  So, this might point to the supreme irony inherent in the Jupiter-Uranus combination- money goes just as easily as it arrives when Jupiter-Uranus get together, yet Guinness plays Dorrit with sympathy and great pathos. When asked, Guinness said that he saw ‘shades of himself’ in Mr. Dorrit, mainly around making wrong decisions. He himself came into money when he was given a small percentage of the box office returns of Star Wars (1977) in which he played guru Obi Wan Kenobe. Is that the ‘Jupiter’ effect? After that he was able to select roles more carefully bringing that careful attention to detail he is famous for in his acting style.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (Leo) also has this conjunction in Aquarius in her 8th House -so it can represent a flood of powerful and influential new ideas to be shared with all as with Theosophy.

Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood

British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood (14/4/1941) another Aries, on the other hand had Jupiter and Uranus conjunct actually in Taurus – and while in the early days she was the driver behind punk rock and bondage gear, she later became the queen of the landfills, filled with recycle mania, a fearless eco-warrior (combative, Aries style). She was very outspoken about the way fashion was wasteful even to the point of advising people not to buy it, which probably did not help her business very much.  She was anti-consumption and was a vocal anti-fracker.

In fact it was a triple conjunction as she had Saturn there with Jupiter and Uranus showing her truly industrious nature. Money was not her main interest however, even though she had the potential to make huge amounts. Her motto was “Buy Less, Choose Well, Make it Last”  which we may all have to do as we focus on what we value after the supplies have all dwindled. She did her evangelising of political justice and sustainability in her characteristically eccentric way which was the Uranian spark as when she wore no knickers in front of the queen. You could this and other actions she made were ‘over the top’ which is the Jupiter effect. Her net worth when she died was around £50 million.

Then there’s the case of Bob Dylan (24/5/41) who, like the Rolling Stones, unexpectedly rolls on and on. He was born when the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction was in late Taurus. This was across signs conjunct his Sun and Eros in Gemini. His brilliance as a wordsmith is undisputed and fits very well his Gemini stellium- the Sun, Venus and Mercury all in Gemini.  He penned some of the most memorable lyrics that spoke for a generation. His chart is ruled by Jupiter which is at 29° in Taurus, and Uranus presides in the 2nd House with Pluto in the 8th.

But he is unfathomable, sometimes rude, changeable, a magpie of multiple styles and never easy to pin down. He even converted to Christianity which surprised many. His net worth is phenomenal – in the region of $400 million, possibly more, as he has lived to retain the rights to his extensive back catalogue of hits going back to the early sixties. For a singer who posed originally as a travelling troubadour and poet of the zeitgeist, that’s a massive accumulation of wealth. In 2020, Dylan sold the publishing rights to his back catalogue to Universal Music for an estimated $300million. He still retains the recording rights to 600 songs, so he’s not going to be out of pocket but the message may be diluted through repeated use in  advertising. Music, it appears, is a rock-solid crisis-resistant investment.

The jury is still out as to what he really meant when he talked about ‘the chief commander’ in his 60-Minutes interview. Was he really talking about the devil, the ruler of ‘this’ world, and the unseen, and whether that meant. People wonder if he has sold his soul or was he just joking? It could be just hearsay but the suspicion lingers around him. Gemini is ruled by Mercury and has a shadow side – the Trickster, the spirit of the crossroads, or Papa Legba which has an insidious and seductive influence which he seems to have toyed with.

Bob Dylan
Bob Dylon B. Kayiob Wikimedia Commons

Dylan wrote in an early song called ‘Talking Devil’ (1963).

“Well, he wants you to hate and he wants you to fear,

Wants you to fear something that’s not even there,

He’ll give you your hate and he’ll give you his lies,

He’ll give you the weapons to run out and die.

And you give him your soul.”

So it is for people to make up their minds as these words are open to interpretation to how familiar Dylan with soul-selling to the Devil.

The point of all this is that Jupiter-Uranus together can be excessive, going too far too soon and there seems to be a theme about huge amounts of money coming in and out.

But I suspect this may also be the case for April next year when this powerful conjunction in Taurus holds sway. It will bring sudden events that expand your range of thinking perhaps with some original and unexpected twist, but you have to be ready to make difficult choices too that bring you down or compromise you in some way like signing a deal you cannot get out of or forcing you to be more radical than you ever thought possible, encouraging greater bravery and boldness. In all it can bring out the rebel guru inside you, plus a wealth of opportunity, and luck favours those who are prepared the most.
